All three of the SilverFast 8 variations come in different versions for different scanner models, so you have to get the right version for the scanner you have. All three also use the same program file for any one scanner, with the license key unlocking the appropriate features for the program level. That makes upgrading easy, since you only need to enter a new license key.
The least expensive variation, with the fewest features, is SilverFast SE 8 ($49). Even with this version, you get an impressive set of sophisticated tools, including controls for manual and automatic color correction, sharpening the image, and dust and scratch removal, complete with support for a hardware-based option using an infrared scan for models that offers it.

The result effectively increases the scanner’s dynamic range (meaning how many shades of gray it can see), so the scan will show more detail based on shading. This is not particularly useful for scanning photographic prints, but it can make a big difference with film, which has a much greater dynamic range. The second scan adds significant time for scanning each image, however, and it doesn’t always give you better quality.
The most notable addition in SilverFast is a color-calibration feature using a standard IT8 calibration target, which you’ll have to buy separately. Calibrating is supremely easy. Put the target in the scanner, click on the color calibration tool, and wait a moment for it to scan and calibrate. That’s all it takes to get scans with better color fidelity. Using the Program As useful as all of the SilverFast tools are, expect to invest a lot of time experimenting with each one to fully understand the effect it has on the scan.
To make things easier, you can see the effect on the preview scan when you change settings and easily undo it if necessary. The program also includes a Wizard of sorts,which is meant to walk you through the steps for different kinds of scans. But learning how to use even the Wizard properly takes time and effort. One potential issue to consider before getting SilverFast is that you not only need a scanner that SilverFast supports, you need to get a different version for every scanner. If you replace your scanner with a new one, you’ll have to get a new version of SilverFast as well. (You can find a list of supported scanners on the website.) A few scanners already come with SilverFast, either as their only scan utility, as with the, or as an alternative to the manufacturer’s own utility, as with the. The Demo software is actually a fully functional version of SilverFast Ai Studio, minus the color calibration feature. The only other limitation is that it watermarks the scans, so you can’t really use them. If you decide to buy the program, you can simply enter the license key to unlock it, without having to reinstall anything. If you’re happy with the scan quality you’re getting from the software that came with your scanner, there’s no reason to consider getting SilverFast.
If you want improved quality, but are concerned about having to buy additional copies for additional scanners, take a close look at VueScan, which is less expensive to begin with and which you can buy once and use on all the models it supports. That said, if you’re not concerned about the possibility of having to buy additional copies, SilverFast Ai Studio 8 is an attractive choice, particularly if you want to go a step further and use it in combination with SilverFast HDR to post-process the scans for the best possible results. Depending on the scanner, either SilverFast or VueScan may be the better choice. Quillota is a city located in the Aconcagua River valley in central Chile’s Valparaíso Region. It is the capital and largest city of Quillota Province where many inhabitants live in the outlying farming areas of San Isidro, La Palma, Pocochay, and San Pedro. It is an important agricultural center, mainly because of the plantations of avocado and cherimoya (custard apple) trees.
Quillota is connected to the city of La Calera by the small town of La Cruz. The area’s agriculture and landscape was described by Charles Darwin in his book The Voyage of the Beagle. In nearby La Campana National Park there is a plaque at a viewpoint commemorating Darwin’s visit.

The Quillota valley has been densely populated for about 2,000 years. At the outset, the area was inhabited by Native Americans of the Bato and Lleo-Lleo cultures, who had migrated to the valley because of the fertile land south of the Aconcagua River. These natives were later influenced by Mapuches and Diaguitas. The Diaguitas are credited with the evolution of the local culture of the Aconcagua zone and were well known for their pottery.
Later, Quillota was mitma and the capital of Qullasuyu, the southern Inca Empire.
Diego de Almagro arrived in the valley in 1536. Incan scouts directed him to a beautiful and very fertile valley where the ’Quillotas’ lived. (Even before Almagro’s arrival, a Spanish soldier from Peru called DonGonzalo Calvo de Barrientos had been captured by the Quillotas and lived in the valley, learning the local language and culture during his captivity.)
Almagro was delighted with the valley, but as he was searching for gold and finding none he returned to Peru. Almagro crossed the valley of Quillota and its environs. And having found the Aconcagua river overflowing and with few possibilities of finding gold, he deemed the land too difficult and returned to Peru, where he was executed.
Later, in 1540, Pedro de Valdivia arrived in Chile with the title of Governor of Chile. He arrived in the valley and built farms and houses, mainly for the slaves and the Indians who were working for him. Almost the whole area occupied by present-day Quillota was de Valdivia’s property.
De Valdivia established here his fortress between San Pedro and Limache, extracting gold from La Campana mountain and cultivating the Rautén valley, La Palma and Boco, taking for himself all the area as his personal property, leaving the Mapocho valley as capital when he founded Santiago.
After the conquest and during the Colonial period,[5] the population was increasing with the mix of races (Spaniards and Aconcaguas) and culture.
Until 1585, Quillota was declared capital of the Corregimiento de Quillota, a large province between Illapel and Casablanca.
In the 16th century attempts were made to found a village in the Quillota valley with all the features and requirements ordered by the Spanish Crown, but it did not succeed.
It was only on November 11, 1717, St. Martin’s Day, that Quillota was founded as a city, originally named ’Village of San Martin de la Concha of Quillota’ in the valley bordering Mayaca Hill. A large part of Quillota’s population is descendants of Spanish settlers and Mestizos. There are still a few families with lands in the valley given by the Spanish governors.City planning[edit]
Quillota’s motto is ’Ciudad creada con cariño’ meaning ’City created with care’. Quillota remains one of the most traditional cities in Chile[citation needed] in that its layout still mainly corresponds to the original colonial Spanish layout of seven blocks square.Due to the geological composition of the ground and the frequency of earthquakes, its architecture has remained low-rise (with a four-story maximum) and traditional. Today, the commune spans an area of 302 km2 (117 sq mi).[2]

It was unclear at the time what Rockstar’s plans were for the game. The most obvious solution would have been to patch GFWL out of the title. However, the developer was vague about the future of the game, only saying that it was “looking at other options for distributing GTA IV for PC.”
On Tuesday, Rockstar confirmed that it is removing GFWL from GTA IV. It will be returning the game to Steam next month on March 19. The update will combine GTA IV and GTA: Episodes from Liberty City into one package called Grand Theft Auto IV: Complete Edition. Owners of either of the former will be able to upgrade to Complete Edition.
Unfortunately, the updated game will no longer support multiplayer mode or leaderboards. Rockstar did not say why it removed multiplayer. The most probable reason is that GFWL served as the backbone for MP mode. Developers would likely have had to rebuild the entire multiplayer infrastructure.
The publisher also said that a few of the radio stations would be temporarily unavailable, including RamJam FM, Self-Actualization FM, and Vice City FM. Having never [intentionally] been winter camping before and my ski pass not yet activated, I decided to hike head-on into an ‘early’ season ‘storm.’
In keeping with my new side-quest to explore Colorado’s various Hot Springs, I headed for Conundrum Hot Springs.
Crossing over Independence Pass 45 minutes before the road closed for the season I felt proud, knowing I’ve done a decent job of maximizing on this hiking season. What I did not think about was that road-trip revelries had eaten most of the day. Clouds were thick and moving fast and the winter evening moved even faster. Suddenly feeling rushed, I hustled through Aspen, not even stopping to eat.
A common destination, the trail head was easy clearance and well marked. From the trail head sign it’s a quick skip into the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness, then 8.5 miles up at a gentle grade. You can measure it between the 3 bridged creek crossings.
Personally I tried counting it in Beaver Dams but eventually lost track. Just at the second crossing I was admiring the dozens of tidily gnawed Aspen stumps and slide down to an impressively expansive dam when there was a commotion just ahead on the trail, where it bordered the dam’s pool.
The architect flopped into the icy water, swam a few laps and slapped his tail, telling me in no uncertain terms, to skedaddle.
Some gals coming down told of one other couple up there but by the cold dark hour I arrived that night, I had naught in me but to set up and pass out. Sometimes, hungry Fidgits don’t make the wisest choices. If you were me, you shoulda made something easy and warm to eat.
Don’t bother throwing temper tantrums against Mother nature. Or do. She won’t care either way.
Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, the Hot Springs. Which apparently are quite the hot spot in the easy months.
I bedded down just as the snow kind of really started. Listening to it flishk onto the tent fly. Waiting for it to insulate this most precious dome of warmth and dryness.
Winter camping is just like normal camping; except everything is heavier and more demanding. For example, I was glad to have brought my -40 Alaska Guide sleeping bag…all 7 lbs of it. Or, at first your Gatorade is a perfect slushie, and all is well in the world. Then suddenly it’s this loathsome brick of ice shards and you’re thirsty and you have this beverage but you just can’t get at it. So you end up sticking your tongue in the bottle just to lick the sweet ice. Pitiful.
Everything quickly goes about the business of freezing. Water in your drinking bladder, camera-phone batteries, olive oil, toothpaste, your extremities, sticky frozen dirt cakes (should you be fool enough to put your backpack down), you get the picture.
Mind you, this being a popular destination, the locals are accustomed to certain privileges. By the middle of the next day, I was the only human up there and the LGB (little grey birds [camp robbers]) were perching everywhere and mouse snow tunnels came and went in all directions. On the rare occasion I left my tent, food was hung.
I ate well. Thanks to the awesome refrigeration power all around, I dared to bring up all sorts of ‘requires refrigeration’ goodies.
By the by, did you know eggs freeze? I didn’t. I just wanted to be cool like Chief Daddy and pack out eggs…
Having set up camp in the first sites I found the night before, it was about a .333 mile hike up to the springs which sit just at tree line.
Follow the only not frozen streams up to the billow of steam. The pool is large, probably 12×10. Below it is another much smaller pool (4 friendly people). Above it is another small pool, which may look cool but leave it be.
Having the entire pool to myself I sat in one spot for about 3 seconds before becoming bored. Went exploring and found where the bubbles come up out of the pebble sand. Not like the eggy smelling SUPER hot pools just off the beach in the Dominican Republic. Nor like the metal dyed pools high in the mountains in Chile.An Odyssey Conundrum Summary
After making a couple snow angels I settled until the water was placid. Only snowflakes fffissing onto the pool surface. Daytime lifted her skirts and began to turn tail around 3:30 pm. Taking advantage of a small break in the weather, I hustled back down to camp. Froze my mits (when winter camping: gloves are like socks- bring 2 pair. [Bring 3 pair of socks]) collecting water.
Clambered back into my lair, where I spent an inordinate amount of time and battery life trying to take a picture of myself journaling. So, embarrassing as it is, the effort begets credit.
Broke camp in under 4.5 hours the next morning, strapped on my micro spikes and traipsed (I love long, gentle downhills) down through a vastly different landscape.
Where before there had been embarrassed and exposed dead plants, was now fields and turns of white.
The trail was mercifully easy to find thanks to a group of kids from CU who had come out with llamas late the night before and left before me the next morning. I was impressed by their excursion and vindicated to find it was mostly girls who were leading the llamas and coordinating.
Eventually passing their party (9 humans, 3 llamas, 6 skis [3 pair]) I again raced this interminably early darkness. Reaching Pickle, I quickly dropped pack, de-iced and got out and off the back-roads lickety-split.
Driving home, I was sated. Most happy knowing I don’t need to do that again for some time!

It’s a premium-priced 27-inch monitor with its work cut out convincing doubters who remember the bad old days of VA panels and associate the technology with ghastly ghosting and chronic lag. That aside, the G7 offers an awfully appealing all-round package, including 1440p resolution, high refresh, adaptive sync, and HDR support, all wrapped up in a snazzy looking chassis and finished with an aggressively curved design.Design & Features
Speaking of LCD curvature, the G7’s super-tight 1000R panel is certainly a defining feature and arguably an opinion splitter. It’s much more curved than most equivalent monitors, which are usually in the 1500R to 1800R range. By other metrics, the G7 is more conventional, albeit at the cutting edge of convention.
The 2,560 by 1,440 native resolution is right at the sweet spot for gaming, for instance, in terms of balancing detail with high frame rates. The latter, of course, is particularly relevant given the lofty 240Hz refresh rate and 1ms response. On paper, those are very impressive figures, but the use of VA rather than TN or IPS panel technology on such a high refresh screen does raise questions. VA has traditionally been the slowest responding LCD technology. Likewise, we’ve seen other recent VA gaming monitors with claimed 1ms response that disappointed in practice.
Other highlights include adaptive sync support, with compatibility for both Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync technologies, plus VESA DisplayHDR 600 certification with local backlight dimming. Again, all very impressive on paper, and edging it into contention to be one of the best G-Sync compatible FreeSync monitors. The look and feel of the Odyssey G7 blows most gaming monitors away for quality and polish, too, an impression aided by Samsung’s funky Core LED mood lighting.

One minor demerit involves connectivity. There are HDMI and DisplayPort, making this a great choice for both PC and incoming consoles with adaptive refresh support. But the lack of USB-C connectivity could be a bummer for anyone planning on hooking up a gaming laptop, even if single-cable connectivity is unlikely to be a goer given the power requirements of a gaming portable.Performance
By most measures, this is a fabulous gaming monitor and one that comprehensively shelves the idea that VA panels aren’t fast enough for gaming. Several levels of user-configurable overdrive are available. But even at the lowest level, this is a very quick, blur-free panel. Cranked all the way up, response rates are pretty stellar and without any ugly inverse ghosting. Impressive and worthy of comparison with the best TN monitors.
The G7 also offers natural, vibrant colours to rival any IPS monitor, plus the excellent black levels and contrast peculiar to VA tech. If that sounds like an impressive all-round performance, it absolutely is. The only snag involves HDR support. While the Samsung Odyssey G7 is HDR certified and has local dimming, that translates into just eight edge-lit vertical zones. That’s a horribly rudimentary implementation and the result is, subjectively, not a true HDR experience. Our only other concern is the extreme curve in the monitor’s design. In-game, it gives a very nice wrap-around feel. Put the HDR disappointment to one side and you’re left with a fantastic, punchy, responsive SDR gaming monitor. The 27-inch proportions, 1440p resolution and 240Hz refresh will absolutely nail it for most gamers, even if we’d counsel a little care over the 1000R curve. Otherwise, the only thing preventing us making this a must-buy is pricing. This is a darn fine screen - and easily one of the best gaming monitors overall - but the price tag is a bit high for most.
